The graduate school “Sciences and environments” jointly supported by University of Bordeaux, University Bordeaux Montaigne and Bordeaux Science Agro was created in 2007 to guide and assist students in working toward a doctoral degree in Earth Sciences, Ecology, Archeology, Philosophy and History of sciences.
The doctoral school #304 Sciences and Environments offers the opportunity to start a PhD thesis in one out of eight fields :
Biogeochemistry and ecosystems
Evolutive, functional and community ecology
Epistemology, history of sciences
Geochemistry and ecotoxicology
Marine sedimentology, paleoclimates
The Doctoral degree firstly grants a 3-year research training. The graduate school provides for it with five CNRS or INRA accredited labs, one university team, one IRSTEA and one IRSN forming a staff of more than 100 researchers, associate-professors and professors holding an accreditation to supervise research.

The completion of a program of study is also required to qualify for a Doctoral degree. The course study, supported by the University of Bordeaux and the graduate school, provides the student with achieving a personal formation in general and/or supporting fields to apply for academic and non-academic jobs requiring a higher education degree.
It is mandatory to be funded (min 900 € / month for 36 months) to register as a PhD student of the University of Bordeaux graduate school Sciences and Environments. Grants are annually offered to the most able students, including non-French students providing that they have a Master’s degree, based on the so-called concours au mérite examination. Regular application on offered fellowship is also available all year long.
